Cantillon Brewery and Brussels Museum of the Gueuze

The Cantillon Brewery and its Brussels Museum of the Gueuze are located in Anderlecht, at around 1.5 km (0.9 mi) of the center of Brussels.

The Cantillon brewery is a family business created in 1900 in the municipality of Anderlecht. At that time, every neighborhood of Brussels had its own brewery to supply local bars. Nowadays, the Cantillon is the only representative brewery of that era. Indeed, other breweries are present in Brussels, but are more recent.

Indeed, in the 70’s, the little family breweries were closing one after the other because the concurrence of the industrial production of the big companies. The real Lambic, which is the base of the Gueuze, was endangered. The taste of the consumers had indeed evolved to beer with more sugar and less bitterness.

In this context, the Brussels Museum of the Gueuze was founded in 1978 in the brewery Cantillon. The main objective is to let known and to preserve the unique fermentation process in the world. The tools, machines, barrels and the production methods are from another era, and constitute a precious brewing heritage, but also of Brussels.
